“Parenting Time” to Replace “Visitation” in Virginia Legislation

“Parenting Time” to Replace “Visitation” in Virginia Legislation

On Friday, February 17, the General Assembly voted its approval of HB271, which replaces the term “visitation” with the more neutral phrase “parenting time” in statutory language addressing custody of minor children.  The new law will become effective July 1, 2017.

Many other states have enacted similar legislation, with the idea of promoting a family-focused policy in the court system.
